This course provides an overview of common acid-base imbalances and a chance to refresh your skills on how to successfully interpret arterial blood gas reports.   It will take you on a short journey through the components of an ABG study, normal values, common acid-base imbalances and their accompanying signs and symptoms, treatment modalities, and a stepwise approach to analyzing ABG results.  The numerous practice problems and case studies provide an opportunity to interpret values, recognize related patient conditions, and identify appropriate interventions.

• Recognize the normal values for PaO2, SaO2, pH, PaCO2, and HCO3.
• List the causes, signs and symptoms, and treatments for the four acid base imbalances: respiratory acidosis, respiratory alkalosis, metabolic acidosis, and metabolic alkalosis.
• Describe the steps for interpreting an arterial blood gas study.
• Correctly interpret arterial blood gas values and the related patient condition.
